Groundbreaking Held for Sandhills Global Youth Complex

Community leaders gathered Tuesday morning for a groundbreaking ceremony of the Sandhills Global Youth Complex.

Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird, along with members from the Lincoln community including former Husker Darin Erstad, Lancaster County Commissioner Sean Flowerday, Nebraska Wesleyan University President Darrin Good and Sampson Construction Vice President Cori Vokoun, spoke about the importance of the project to Lincoln and officially broke ground on the site of the new complex, which will be constructed on the southeast corner of N. 1st Street and Cornhusker Highway.

The Sandhills Global Youth Complex (SGYC) will be the first baseball and softball complex of its kind in the state of Nebraska. The all-turf fields are designed to be a space for youth of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to come together and play their best. Additionally, the complex will play host to instructional camps, clinics, games and tournaments for youth from Lincoln, the region and the country with a focus on the best possible family and fan experience.

In addition to youth tournaments, the facility will be the new home for Nebraska Wesleyan Baseball and Softball with a 500-seat stadium for baseball and 300-seat stadium for softball, as well as other experience-directed supporting amenities. Sampson Construction will begin construction of the complex immediately with the site scheduled to be finished early in 2025, allowing for tournament play to begin in the spring.

The Sandhills Global Youth Complex is made possible thanks to the generous support of the City of Lincoln, Lancaster County, JPA and private sector funding. Fundraising opportunities still exist for the project with numerous local partners joining the effort.
