After you have feasted on turkey and pumpkin pie, for many of you, it will be time to head to stores and shopping malls to take advantage of Black Friday deals and get a head start on your holiday shopping. At the Chamber, we ask that you consider shopping small and shopping local on as many purchases as possible this holiday season.  The money you spend at retailers here in Lincoln helps boost our local sales tax base, helps our community grow and helps sustain thousands of jobs in our local economy. When our local sales tax collections grow, it helps off-set the reliance on other taxes and helps to fund all of the things a growing city needs to be successful. A shift in just a few of your purchases from online or out-of-town sales to local Lincoln purchases will make a tremendous difference.

In addition to helping the community grow, when you buy local you also support the foundation on which all good economies are built, small business. According to the Small Business Association, small businesses have generated 64 percent of new jobs over the past 15 years. In fact, the majority of Chamber members have less than 10 employees working on staff. That's why the Lincoln Chamber is joining forces with American Express to promote Small Business Saturday. This effort is aimed at reminding shoppers to consider smaller, Lincoln-based businesses as a source of holiday giving. Your money and how you spend it can make the difference in somebody else's business.
